The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or as we often call it, Staffie, has won the crown for 2nd time in a row, as Britain’s favourite dog in 2020.

Origin and characteristics

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed was first created in Staffordshire, UK in the 19th Century by crossing Bulldogs with various terrier breeds including the Black and Tan Terrier. The Staffordshire Bull terrier was initially bred to be strong and muscular for dog fighting, bull baiting and vermin control. Unfortunately, their fighting background has given the Staffie a bad reputation, and they are often thought of as a dangerous breed, but anyone who owns a Staffordshire terrier can tell that they are lovely and caring pets. Their popularity has grown throughout the years, as they have a gentle nature and are loveable and fine companion. They are also a great family pet, as they are intelligent and affectionate.

Coat, Shedding, Grooming

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a short, smooth coat that lies close to their skin. They shed very little throughout the year, but they may shed more heavily around autumn/spring. This is due do the changing weather, they shed their old coat to prepare for colder/warmer season. During this time weekly brushing is recommended to remove excess dead hair. In some cases, however, heavier than normal molting can be the result of things like poor diet, stress, fleas or an underlying health issue. Because their hair is so short, dirt can be easily brushed out from their coat and it dries very quickly after bath.

How to manage shedding?

Ensure your dog has a healthy balanced diet and frequent and thorough grooming. Include food with high quality ingredients in their meals to provide the nutrition they need. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to help improve a dog’s skin and maintain a beautiful shiny coat.
