Origin and characteristics

For many years, there was a legend that Golden Retrievers were descended from Russian sheepdogs. In fact, the breed was developed in Scotland in the 19th century.

As the name suggests, they were originally bred for hunting and physically demanding jobs, to retrieve game like duck and fowl and have since become one of the UK’s most popular dog breeds.

Their heritage as retrievers means they’re packed full of energy and have lots of stamina, meaning they require plenty of regular exercise.

Golden Retrievers are a very intelligent breed who are easy to train, so they’re one of the most common breeds used as guide dogs and they perform extremely well in dog sports.

Their friendly, tolerant and playful attitude makes them a perfect family pet. They are slow to mature and often keep their puppy like tendencies until late into adulthood. They are very good with children and other dogs, although you should be careful around small children as they can get overly excited and accidentally knock them over. Golden Retrievers are family dogs; they need to live indoors with their human “pack,” and shouldn’t spend hours alone in the backyard.

They are not very good watchdogs because of their friendly personality.

Goldens are naturally “mouthy,” which means they like chewing or to have something in their mouth: a ball, chewy toy, or even a shoe.

Coat, Shedding, Grooming

Golden Retrievers have a dense water-repellent coat that they shed moderately in winter and summer and heavily in autumn and spring, therefore they require regular grooming.

How to manage shedding?

Daily brushing during is recommended in shedding season to remove loose hair from their coat.  They require a bath once a month to keep them clean and smell good. If they get used to being brushed and examined at a young age, they will be cooperative and will handle it well as an adult.
