Origin and characteristics

Cockapoos are loyal, small adorable dogs. They are a mix of Cocker Spaniels and Poodles. Their life-loving spirit and great temperament make them a perfect family pet. The have a sweet personality and they can easily tolerate other dogs, pets and children. Cockapoos are very intelligent which makes them easy to train. Because of their small size, they can be kept indoors in an apartment, but they also need some space to play and run around. They only require little exercise, around 15-20 minutes a day.

Coat, Shedding, Grooming

Because they are a breed of 2 dogs, the level of shedding depends on the gene of the parent that’s more dominant. So, for example if their Poodle genes are more dominant, they will shed less, while if their Cocker spaniel genes are dominant, they will shed slightly more. Their shedding is still minimal, however, because their hair is long, it tangles very quickly, so they need regular brushing to remove tangles from their hair. Many of them have slightly curly hair that doesn’t fall out as often. Due to their limited shedding, they are perfect dogs for people with allergies. They don’t need frequent bathing because of their lack of odour.

How to manage shedding?

Cockapoos moult their puppy coat when they start growing up.Usually by the time they reach the age of 8 months, they lose their puppy coat and their adult coat grows in place. It is fairly simple to manage a Cockapoo’s puppy coat.Gently brushing their hair every other day, using a detangling brush or a slicker brush will help maintain their coat and remove tangles and loose hair. If you start getting them used to this at a young age, it will be easier to groom them when they become older and their adult coat settles in.Most Cockapoos don’t shed, or if they do, it is a minimal amount. This usually happens twice a year and their new coat comes in in about 2 weeks. An adult Cockapoo can grow a coat up to about 15cms long, so it is necessary to trim their hair, especially near the eyes to ensure their visibility is not limited. Trimming the hair around the chin area will prevent food and dirt to stick and tangle their coat. You look after their adult coat by brushing it 4-5 times a week and bathing only when necessary. Bathing too frequently will remove the natural oils from their skin, which can cause dryness and itch skin.
